Remembering a Different Capitol Shooting

For a humor blog, it’s been a dark week.

Another mass shooting.  This time at Annapolis’ Capital Gazette newspaper.  5 dead.

It was a college intern’s tweet asking for help that went viral.

This seemed like a day to remember that almost 20 years ago there was a deadly shooting at a different Capitol.

Friday, July 24, 1998, and I had just started interning with The Congressman.  Luckily, it was only part-time and was working that afternoon at Brooks Brothers.

A paranoid schizophrenic stormed the “Document Door” at the Capitol.  According to his court-appointed psychiatrist, he was there to thwart armies of cannibals and prevent the United States from being annihilated by disease.

He murdered 2 U.S. Capitol Police Officers.

They’ve since renamed the Members of Congress and staff-only “Document Door” to “The Memorial Door” in their honor.

You can read John Boehner’s touching tribute here.
